Originally, Georges St. Pierre was slated to defend his welterweight championship against Diaz. However, St. Pierre suffered a torn ACL, and underwent surgery in December 2011, sidelining him for the foreseeable future. Condit was bumped up to the main event of UFC 143, with the winner earning the interim title in St. Pierre's absence.
